  19.                     HERE'S HOW SHAREWARE WORKS:
  20.  
  21. You are encouraged to copy the PC-Type diskettes and share them freely with
  22. others. You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs, at your own
  23. pace and in the comfort of your own home or workplace. This is not a crippled
  24. or demo copy, but the complete working version of the program.
  25.  
  26. After you have used PC-Type for a reasonable evaluation period (not to exceed
  27. 90 days) you must either stop using it or buy a licensed copy from ButtonWare
  28. or from an authorized dealer.
  29.  
  30. Why pay at all?

  46. your friends and associates. The following restrictions are designed to
  47. protect the community of Shareware users and to prevent others from taking
  48. unfair advantage of the trust, hard work, and good will of Shareware authors.

  56. 1. Disk vendors (those who sell Shareware disks for a profit) must follow
  57.    the procedure outlined in the "VENDOR.DOC" file.
  58. 2. You may not charge more than $3 (U.S.) per diskette.
  59. 3. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified or deleted.
  60. 4. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.
  61. 5. The programs cannot be rented or leased to others.
  62. 6. When distributed via a telecommunications link, all ButtonWare programs
  63.    (and documentation files) must be transferred in a library or archive
  64.    format. This means that all the files on each ButtonWare disk must be
  65.    combined into one file - one file for each ButtonWare disk.
  66. 7. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a classroom,
  67.    you must distribute the classroom edition of the software.  You can
  68.    obtain a copy of the classroom edition of the software by contacting
  69.    ButtonWare's business office at 206-454-0479.  The classroom edition is
  70.    the complete program, but with an initial message indicating the program
  71.    is for classroom use.
  72. 8. Shareware distribution is permitted only in the United States, Canada,
  73.    The British Isles, and Australasia. Please see the section below entitled:
  74.    SHAREWARE COPYING OUTSIDE OF THE USA.
  75. 9. When PC-Type is used on a network, one licensed copy of the program
  76.    must be purchased for each station that uses PC-Type.

  82. PC-Type requires a hard disk or two 3-1/2" disk drives, DOS 3.0 or higher
  83. and at least 384K available RAM.
  84.  
  85. The PC-Type files are compressed into three files on the distribution
  86. disks.  These files must be "uncompressed" before you can use PC-Type.
  87.  
  88. INSTALLING TO A HARD DRIVE
  89.  
  90. The INSTALL program is provided to uncompress these files and install
  91. PC-Type onto your system.  To install the programs, put the PC-Type program
  92. disk into your A: disk drive and type
  93.  
  94.     A:INSTALL
  95.  
  96. INSTALL creates a subdirectory on your hard disk and copies the necessary
  97. programs and files into that subdirectory. 1450K of disk space is required
  98. to install all files.
  99.  
  100. When installation is completed, you may want to modify some of the default
  101. configuration settings.  To do this, first start PC-Type by typing PCT and
  102. pressing Enter at the DOS prompt.  hen press F2 to bring up the main menu
  103. and then press C to bring up the configuration menu.
  104.  
  105. Special notice should be given to the (S)witches option in this menu.
  106. Here, you can set the action of the Enter key, the insert shape and cursor
  107. location on entry, etc.  (See your manual for configuration settings and
  108. options.)  Printer escape codes can be created or modified with the
  109. (E)scape codes option.
  110.  
  111. When you press Esc to exit the Configuration menu, you are asked if you
  112. want to update your .PRO file.  If you answer Y, enter the path and
  113. select the desired .PRO file and your profile file will be updated.
  114.

  116. INSTALLING TO 3 1/2" DISKS
  117.  
  118. If you ordered PC-Type on 3 1/2" disks, you will receive two disks instead
  119. of three.  Both the program and dictionary disk files are on the 3 1/2"
  120. Disk One.  The utility files are on Disk Two.
  121.  
  122. The file INST1.BAT is on the 3 1/2" Disk One and the file INST2.BAT is
  123. on the 3 1/2" Disk Two.  These two files are only used to install
  124. PC-Type to 3 1/2" disks.
  125.  
  126. To install PC-Type to 3 1/2" disks:
  127.  
  128.          (A) Format 3 disks to 720K (or more is preferable).
  129.          (B) Label these disks as:
  130.              (1) WORKING DISK
  131.              (2) OTHER PGMS DISK
  132.              (3) MISC DISK
  133.          (C) Copy COMMAND.COM to the WORKING DISK.
  134.          (D) Place the distribution PROGRAM disk into drive A.
  135.          (E) Type  A:INST1 after the DOS prompt and press Enter.
  136.          (F) Follow the instructions on swapping disks.
  137.              (Half way through the installation process you will be asked to
  138.              place the UTILITY disk into drive A, type A:INST2 after the DOS
  139.              prompt and press Enter.)

  141. Before running PC-Type on your two 3 1/2" disk system, you should
  142. make sure that you have an active PATH statement like:
  143.  
  144.                                 PATH=A:\;B:\;
  145.  
  146. It is recommended that you place this statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  147.  
  148. To run PC-Type on your two 3 1/2" disk system:
  149.  
  150.          (A) Place the WORKING disk into drive A.  (Note that COMMAND.COM
  151.              should be on this disk.)
  152.          (B) Move to the B drive by typing B: at the DOS prompt and
  153.              pressing Enter.
  154.          (C) Insert the disk with files to be edited into drive B.
  155.          (D) Start PC-Type by typing   PCT filename   as described in the
  156.              manual.

  158. NOTE: Two 3 1/2" disk systems will not be able to use PCG2.EXE, PCGG.EXE,
  159.       or INDEX.EXE directly from inside PC-Type because of disk space
  160.       limitations.  The HELP may also be unavailable.  If you can format
  161.       your WORKING disk to 1.44 MEG, then you have sufficient room to
  162.       place all the files targeted to the WORKING disk AND the OTHER
  163.       PGMS disk onto the WORKING disk itself, and all the programs will
  164.       interface as described in the manual.
  165.  
  166.       The only other way to circumvent the above problem is to copy the
  167.       necessary files, PCG2.EXE, PCGG.EXE, INDEX.EXE and PCT.HLP to the
  168.       diskette you will be using for file storage.  However, these files
  169.       will use about 350K of storage space.
  170.  
  171.       PCG2.EXE  is required to link directly to the graphics program.
  172.       PCGG.EXE  is required if you want to print graphs inside your text.
  173.       INDEX.EXE is required to make index and table of contents files.
  174.       PCT.HLP   is required for on-line help.

  181. If you did not purchase PC-Type (complete with printed manual) directly
  182. from ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer, then you are evaluating the
  183. program.
  184.  
  185. We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate PC-Type.
  186. The program uses clear, informative menus. Help screens are always available.
  187. Also, the file "CARD" can be printed to create a quick reference card with a
  188. summary of the program commands.
  189.  
  190. This is sufficient for most people to evaluate the program. However, some
  191. people prefer to have a complete copy of the printed manual.
  192.  
  193. A complete copy of the printed manual for PC-Type is available on floppy
  194. disk to help you with your evaluation. It's almost 400 pages long so you'll
  195. need a lot of time, patience, and paper to print it out.
  196.  
  197. The manual on disk has been mailed to most of the major computer clubs, user
  198. groups, shareware disk dealers and bulletin board operators. You can obtain
  199. the manual on disk from one of these groups. Just ask for PC-Type disk number
  200. 4, or the PC-Type manual on disk.  To keep costs down, disk 4 is not
  201. included with purchased copies of PC-Type and cannot be bought directly
  202. from ButtonWare. Purchased copies include a complete printed User's Manual,
  203. typeset and bound.

  205. To print the PC-Type 4 documentation, follow these steps:
  206.  
  207.   1.  Copy the files from the PC-Type 4 documentation disk to your hard
  208.   disk using the DOS COPY command.  For example, to copy the files to the
  209.   PCTYPE subdirectory on your C drive, insert the PC-Type 4 documentation
  210.   disk in drive A and type:
  211.  
  212.     COPY A:*.* C:\PCTYPE
  213.  
  214.   and press (Enter).
  215.  
  216.   2.  Change to the drive and directory you copied the files to in step 1.
  217.  
  218.   3.  "Unzip" the documentation files.  To do this, type the following:
  219.  
  220.     PKUNZIP PCT4DOC
  221.  
  222.   Note: You must have 1.4 megabytes available on your hard disk to complete
  223.         these steps.
  224.  
  225.   4.  Type PRINTDOC when ready to begin printing.  However, please note the
  226.   following warnings before printing.
  227.  
  228.   WARNINGS:
  229.   1.  Because the PC-Type 4 documentation includes graphics characters, we
  230.   highly recommend you print to a graphics printer.  If the documentation
  231.   is printed to a non-graphics printer, many of the screen shots and menus
  232.   will not print properly.
  233.  
  234.   2.  The PC-Type 4.0 manual is configured for a page length of 62.
  235.   Therefore, if you are printing to a dot matrix printer with the skip-over
  236.   perforation option turned on or printing to a laser printer, you may need
  237.   to make modifications to your printer configuration before printing the
  238.   documentation.  If printing on a dot matrix printer with the skip-over
  239.   perforation option turned on, you must turn this option off.  Refer to
  240.   your printer manual for information on how to do this.  If printing to a
  241.   laser printer, you must set your page length to a minimum of 62; 66 is
  242.   the optimum setting.  Refer to your printer manual for information on how
  243.   to do this.

  245.   If you do not follow the suggestions listed in Step 2, blank pages may be
  246.   printed after each page.

  253. (1) The ALLDOS command saves the contents of memory to disk and frees that
  254.     space in memory to run DOS or other applications from DOS.  The file
  255.     which is saved is fairly large.  If you have an environment variable
  256.     TEMP=pathspec, the file is saved to that pathspec.  If this pathspec is
  257.     a RAM drive, the process of dropping to DOS in this mode is considerably
  258.     faster.  If this environment variable does not exist, the file will
  259.     be written to your default directory if sufficient room exists.
  260.  
  261.     You can set the TEMP variable as:
  262.  
  263.     C>set temp=x:\dirpath
  264.  
  265.     where C> is the DOS prompt,
  266.     x is the desired drive, and
  267.     dirpath is the desired path on that drive.
  268.  
  269.     Note that x:\dirpath must be a valid path.

  319.    User-Supported Software outside the shareable Area.

  321. 5. Outside the shareable Area, ButtonWare software may not be downloaded from
  322.    Public Libraries or Bulletin Boards, or copied from CD-ROM or CD-WORM
